Indications emerged on Monday that the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has settled on the lawmaker representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Senator Adeola Olamilekan (Yayi) as its consensus flagbearer for the 2027 governorship election.
The resolution was reached during the party’s caucus meeting held at Abiola Way, Iyana Mortuary, Abeokuta, where discussions centred on succession plans and preparations ahead of the next election cycle.
The State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who announced Yayi’s candidacy, expressed his desire and that of his predecessors to have a governor of Ogun West extraction succeed him after his tenure in 2027.
“Nothing will give me more joy than to fulfil all the dreams of my predecessors and ensure that Ogun West produces the governor,” Abiodun said.
He added: “I look forward to sitting down at the send-forth on the night before my departure from office, a send-forth that will be attended by my successor and also sitting down proudly with all the former governors at the swearing-in of a new governor of APC.
The governor thereafter announced Senator Yayi as the party’s consensus candidate to a loud cheer from party members.
“On that note, permit me to unveil the person we all agreed is truly deserving of being the next flagbearer of our dear state, distinguished Senator Olamilekan Adeola,” he declared.
Immediately after the announcement, Yayi rose to his feet as supporters erupted in cheers, with trumpets blaring and chants filling the hall in a show of support.
However, it remains to be seen whether the endorsement has the nod of other aspirants who had also signified interest in flying the party’s ticket in the next election.
