The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has formally tendered his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing a decision to pursue his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State.
In a letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to the President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the minister stated that his resignation would take effect on April 30, 2026, to allow for a “smooth and orderly handover of responsibilities.”
The letter conveyed the minister’s “deep sense of honour and profound gratitude” for the opportunity to serve in the administration. He acknowledged the confidence reposed in him by the President and described his tenure as a rare privilege to contribute to national development, particularly in advancing reforms in the power sector.

According to the minister, his decision to step down is driven by a long-standing political aspiration to contest the governorship of Oyo State. He noted that the ambition dates back to 2016 during his time as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, which led to his earlier resignation from the apex bank in 2018 to pursue the same goal.
He also referenced provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2022, which require political office holders seeking elective positions to resign, describing his action as both “appropriate and necessary” in compliance with the law.
The letter was officially received and stamped by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on the same date.
The development marks a significant change in the leadership of Nigeria’s power sector, with expectations that the Presidency will soon announce an interim or substantive replacement.
