The member representing Edu State Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly, Saba Gideon, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing concerns over internal democracy, fairness and inclusiveness within the party.
Gideon confirmed his resignation to The newsmen during a telephone conversation in Ilorin on Thursday.
In a resignation letter dated August 19, 2026, and addressed to the APC Ward Chairman of Tsaragi Ward 3 in Edu Local Government Area, the lawmaker formally announced his departure from the ruling party.
Gideon, who serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Livestock, said the decision followed consultations with his constituents and other stakeholders.
“I hereby formally resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress, effective immediately,” he stated in the letter.
According to him, recent developments within the party prompted him to reconsider his continued membership after careful reflection.
“This decision follows careful reflection and consultations with my constituents and key stakeholders.
“Recent developments within the party, particularly concerning internal democracy, fairness and inclusiveness, have led me to take this decision,” Gideon said.
Despite his resignation, the lawmaker assured his constituents that his commitment to representing them remained unchanged.
“I remain committed to serving the people of Edu State Constituency, Kwara State, and Nigeria with integrity, dedication, and accountability,” he said.
Gideon also expressed appreciation to the APC and its members for the support and opportunity he received during his time in the party.
“Thank you for the opportunity to serve and for the support received during my membership of the party,” he added.
The lawmaker has yet to announce the political platform he intends to join following his exit from the APC.
His resignation comes several months after his suspension by the Kwara State House of Assembly over allegations of contempt and breach of legislative privilege.
On December 18, 2025, the Assembly suspended Gideon for three months after accusing him of secretly recording a closed-door meeting and sharing the audio with an unauthorised individual.
The motion for his suspension was moved by the House Leader, Abdulkadir Magaji, who cited provisions of the Assembly’s rules on privileges and the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, 2017.
At the time, Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu said the unauthorised recording and subsequent circulation of the audio could damage the reputation of the legislative institution.
“Hon. Gideon’s conduct amounted to contempt and a breach of privilege,” the Speaker said while announcing the House resolution.
The Assembly further instructed Gideon to submit a written apology during the period of his suspension.
Gideon, however, challenged the suspension in court. In February 2026, the Kwara State High Court nullified the action, describing it as unconstitutional, unlawful and without legal effect.
The court ruled that the suspension, which was imposed through a motion without notice, violated the lawmaker’s rights and was not supported by the relevant provisions of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act or the Assembly’s rules.
