Ogun Reconstitutes Awujale Interregnum Council, Names Olisa Chairman, Okunowo Secretary

The Ogun State Government has reconstituted the Awujale Interregnum Administrative Council (AIAC), appointing Chief Rasheed Adeoye Adesanya (Olisa of Ijebu-Ode) as Chairman and Chief Chris Okunowo (Bobasuwa) as Secretary.

The government said the council remains the only legally recognised body empowered to oversee the administrative and traditional affairs of Ijebuland pending the appointment and coronation of a new Awujale.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, the government dismissed claims arising from the reported withdrawal of some council members, stressing that such actions do not invalidate the AIAC.

The state government also declared that the recently reported “Adele Oba Awujale” group has no legal or customary recognition under the Awujale Chieftaincy Declaration or Ogun State’s chieftaincy laws.

According to the government, a consent judgment of the Ogun State High Court had already affirmed the legality and authority of the AIAC, with all council members being parties to the suit.

Reconstituted AIAC Members:

Chief Rasheed Adesanya (Olisa of Ijebu-Ode) – Chairman

Chief Chris Okunowo (Bobasuwa) – Secretary

Prof. Jide Ajayi (Jagun Aso) – Member

Chief Stephen O. Bakare (Babalaje) – Member

Chief Alade Shote (Otun Balogun) – Member

The government urged the public to engage only with the officially recognised council and warned against transactions with individuals claiming authority through alternative bodies.

It further reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful, transparent and lawful process leading to the emergence of a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
