Tinubu Mourns Former Super Eagles Coach Onigbinde

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to renowned football administrator and former Super Eagles head coach, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88.

In a condolence message, the President sympathised with the family, friends, and associates of the late sports icon, describing his death as a great loss to Nigerian football and the nation’s sporting community.

President Tinubu also extended his condolences to the Nigeria Football Federation, the National Sports Commission, professional colleagues, former players, and football fans who benefitted from Onigbinde’s decades of service to the development of the game in Nigeria.

The President recalled that Chief Onigbinde distinguished himself as the first indigenous coach of the Super Eagles in 1982, a landmark achievement that opened a new chapter for local coaches in the management of the national team.

He commended the late Modakeke high chief for his unwavering commitment to grassroots football development and his significant role in strengthening football administration in the country.

President Tinubu further acknowledged Onigbinde’s historic leadership of the national team, particularly his role in guiding Nigeria to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984.

According to the President, the accomplished football manager will be remembered for his discipline, integrity, foresight, and enduring passion for the round-leather game.

Tinubu noted that Onigbinde’s legacy in Nigerian football would continue to inspire future generations of players, coaches, and sports administrators.

A statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, Tuesday, quoted President Tinubu  praying for the peaceful repose of the departed and asked God to grant his family and loved ones the strength and comfort to bear the loss.
