Bubiade Royal Family of Ijebu-Ode has called for fairness and recognition of its customary rights in the ongoing process surrounding the selection of a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
It said its lineage deserved the opportunity to produce the next monarch.
Addressing reporters at a news conference in Ijebu-Ode, the Olori-Ebi of Bubiade Royal Family, Alhaji Olaide Busura, said the call was necessary to correct what he described as a long-standing historical imbalance within the royal lineage of the Awujale stool.
Busura said Bubiade lineage traced its ancestry to Oba Jadiara, one of the past Awujales of Ijebuland, adding that Bubiade was the first child of Jadiara, while Funsegbuwa, another child of the monarch, later produced Tunwase, whose descendants have historically produced several Awujales.
Alhaji Busura noted that historical records showed the throne within the Jadiara royal stock had repeatedly circulated between the descendants of Funsegbuwa and Tunwase, leaving Bubiade lineage without any opportunity to ascend the throne.
He listed past monarchs who had emerged from the other branches to include Oba Funsegbuwa, Adesimbo Tunwase, Adekoya Eleruja and Adenuga Folagbade, who became Awujale in 1925.
