2027: Don’t Handover Ogun State To Non-Indigene, Arabambi Urges Gov. Abiodun

A political advocate, Dr. Arabambi Abayomi, has urged Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure that his successor in the 2027 governorship election is an indigene of the state.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Arabambi cautioned against what he termed a “hostile succession” by non-indigenes or political outsiders.

Drawing on Yoruba proverbs and referencing Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Arabambi argued that Ogun State’s deep cultural and traditional structures must not be overlooked in leadership transitions. Unlike Lagos, he noted, Ogun remains a heritage-based society where the governorship is a “custodian of Yoruba cultural identity,” not a marketplace for the highest bidder.
Arabambi emphasized that while Ogun welcomes all residents and investors, the position of governor should pass among indigenes of the Egba, Ijebu, Yewa, Awori, and Remo communities. He expressed concern that wealthy external political interests might disrupt a “brother-to-brother” transition in 2027.
With Governor Abiodun completing his second and final term in 2027, Arabambi called on him to secure his legacy by facilitating a peaceful, consensus-driven handover to a “true son or daughter” of the state, in consultation with traditional rulers and stakeholders.
