Atiku demands probe into attack on ADC secretariat in Rivers

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for an independent investigation into the torching of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Rivers State to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Wazirin Adamawa, in a post on X on Friday night, said failure to do so might encourage others to inflict further violence on the lives and property of opposition members.

He condemned the attack on the ADC office in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, saying, “It is a dangerous development that efforts to weaken the opposition have now shifted to attacking its members and destroying its property.

“These are not merely attacks on the opposition coalition ADC, but an assault on our democracy.

“The protection of the lives and property of the opposition must, as a priority, be guaranteed by the Tinubu-led APC administration. That is the minimum expectation of Nigerians.

“Meanwhile, we are still awaiting the outcome of the investigation into the attack on Mr. @PeterObi and other @ADCNig leaders last week in Benin, Edo State.”

A former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, in a post on X, said he was at the ADC secretariat in his community, Ubima, which was burnt down by hoodlums in the early hours of Friday morning before the party’s registration flag-off event.

He urged ADC members and his supporters not to resort to violence or retaliation, stating that security agencies must apprehend and bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to book.

“These evil acts of intimidation and violence cannot deter us but will make us stronger and more determined to vote out this government that is rapidly destroying our country, Nigeria,” he added.

In a second post, Amaechi declared that he had officially registered as a member of the ADC on Friday after flagging off the party’s e-registration drive in Rivers State at his hometown.

He also declared open the new ADC Rivers State Secretariat in Port Harcourt, stressing that, “Our goal is to register en masse and achieve enough numbers that will collectively defeat the irresponsible and disastrous APC-led government in the 2027 general elections.”
